Two food safety workshops hosted in New Zealand have opened the channels of communication between organisations when it comes to food safety, host IChemE (the Institution of Chemical Engineers) says.

The most successful elements of the workshops will be delivered in a food safety webinar in the near future, according to David Platts, immediate past chair of IChemE’s New Zealand board.

The workshops covered the latest developments in food process safety and emerging regulations for major hazard facilities. Speakers included senior food and safety industry representatives from Fonterra, Kerplast Manufacturing, Plant and Food Research, Synlait, Westland, ANSCO AsureQuality, Primary Industries and WorkSafe New Zealand.

“The meeting showed a powerful commitment to further enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a global supplier of safe food,” said Platts.

“I was encouraged by the willingness of organisations to share information on food process safety issues with their industry peers. This approach is already commonplace in the oil and gas sector where we often see operating companies sharing safety data with their competitors, disseminating lessons learned for the good of the sector as a whole.”
