Salmon most popular with consumers aged 65+

What’s for dinner for almost a quarter of all Australians aged 14+? Salmon, according to new research from Roy Morgan. While 53% of all Australians ate fish in any given week, 24% - almost half - ate salmon, the research shows.

While salmon is a popular choice, its popularity peaks with the 50+ age group. Only 11% of consumers aged 14-17 ate salmon in a given week, while 30% of those aged 50-64 and 32% of those over 65 said they eat salmon each week.

Age also seems to dictate which variety of salmon - fresh, smoked or canned - is most popular. Fresh salmon is preferred across all age groups, but smoked salmon is the next most popular variety for those under 65. Consumers aged 65+ are slightly more keen on canned salmon than smoked salmon, at 11 and 10% respectively.

“Nearly one in four Australians consume some form of salmon in an average seven-day period, with fresh salmon being the favourite variety for all age groups,” said Angela Smith, group account director - consumer products, Roy Morgan Research.

“Salmon is especially popular with older age groups. This could be because the unusual texture of salmon takes some time to get used to, or it could be that older Aussies are just more health-conscious generally.”
