Rules for Indian dairy imports to change

Thursday, 01 August, 2013

Dairy exporters, take note: the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) no longer permits the use of animal rennet in the manufacture of dairy products.

Indian requirements already stipulate that dairy products must be labelled as containing animal or vegetable rennet, resulting in cheese needing to be vegetarian due to consumer preferences.

The FFSAI has informed the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) that, when the prohibition is formally notified, health certificates for dairy products exported to India will need to be amended.

DAFF has amended the dairy Manual of Importing Country Requirements (MICoR) country entry for India to include this information under section 3.2. ‘Production of milk and milk products’ and included links to India’s official websites and regulations under section 1.4 ‘Further information’ and section 5.1 ‘Labelling and packaging’.
