GM soybean application open for comment
Dow AgroSciences Australia has applied to have the Food Standards Code changed to allow genetically modified soybean. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has issued a call for submissions on the application.
“This soybean line contains two insecticidal proteins to protect it against pests, including soybean looper, velvetbean caterpillar and tobacco budworm,” said FSANZ CEO Steve McCutcheon.
“The FSANZ safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns and that food from this soybean line is as safe for human consumption as food derived from conventional soybean.”
The closing date for submissions on application A1087 is 17 December 2013. Government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community are welcome to make submissions.
