Carlton United Brewery site reveals its secrets

Wednesday, 13 March, 2013

The old Carlton United Brewery site at the top end of Swanson Street in Melbourne has been revealing its secrets to a team of archaeologists from La Trobe University, the site developer, Grocon, and heritage consultants Godden Mackay Logan.

The site was a working brewery from 1858 until it closed in the late 1980s. Carlton and United Brewery commenced its operations there in 1865. Now Grocon is redeveloping the site for a mix of commercial and residential uses. As part of the redevelopment approval, Heritage Victoria stipulated that Grocon should fund the $1 million, six-week dig.

About seventy La Trobe University archaeology students and about 15 professional archaeologists are excavating the footings of the seven-storey brewhouse, built in 1873, and the early 1850s shanty town before that.

Finds so far include domestic ceramic crockery and old bottles to industrial items such as barrel stoppers and a large iron furnace stoker.

The artefacts will be conserved by Heritage Victoria and lodged with Museum Victoria so that current and future generations can undertake research on historic material culture.
