Spanish seafood manufacturer transitions to paper packaging
Global sustainable packaging and paper company Mondi has supported Angulas Aguinaga in its transition to recyclable, paper-based packaging for its Krissia brand chilled surimi sticks, reducing the amount of plastic being used.
Previously packed in a multi-material plastic solution, the brand is now transitioning to a secondary packaging which uses Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper. The packaging is designed to protect the chilled product and reduce plastic usage by up to 20 tonnes annually.
The kraft base paper is responsibly sourced and made from renewable and certified resources. It is designed to be tear-resistant and is converted in-house by Mondi to customise barrier protection of the food and make the packaging sealable. The final packaging is recyclable in Spain’s existing paper recycling streams.
Jordi Gorchs, Regional Manager France & Southern Europe, Consumer Flexibles, Mondi, said the packaging supports a circular economy and keeps valuable materials in the loop.
“We took the time to focus on the needs of the product first before optimising our FunctionalBarrier Paper to provide a responsible, recyclable replacement to the previous plastic alternative,” Gorchs said.
Mikel Grande, Angulas Aguinaga Marketing and Innovation Manager, said the company is committed to creating solutions that solve consumer needs, such as the demand for sustainable packaging. He said Angulas Aguinaga is the first brand offering paper-based packaging for chilled fish.
