Chlorine dioxide is claimed to be a safe and potent broad spectrum biocide that is effective over a wide pH range in hard and soft water and does not react with other chemicals and impurities to produce harmful bi-products. Until recently the only way to use ClO2 was by producing it on site. However, due to recent technological advances, Actisan (a 2000 ppm solution of chlorine dioxide gas) is now available.
This versatile, broad spectrum biocide has a wide range of uses including post-harvest fruit and vegetable sanitation, food processing, disinfection of process water, removal of biofilms from heat exchangers and removal of spoilage organisms from meat and fish.
Actisan functions by oxidation not chlorination and therefore does not produce trihalomethanes or other undesirable chlorine compounds. Also, because of its mode of action organisms cannot build up a resistance to it.
Chlorine dioxide is approved by FSANZ as a processing aid for foodstuffs and in water used as an ingredient in other foods. Actisan is also approved for use in export meat abattoirs.
The applications of Actisan are extensive with reports of increases in shelf life and freshness in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, meat and fish.
Actisan is safe to use and is environmentally friendly.
