Official ecolabel for NZ

Tuesday, 01 July, 2008 | Supplied by: Environmental Choice

Although claims of sustainability and environmental performance abound, in New Zealand Environmental Choice is the one ecolabel that is backed by the New Zealand government and verifies all its applicants’ claims using independent, third-party expert assessors. Assessors make their detailed audits using publicly available standards that are based on the best international practices and the best science available.

Environmental Choice New Zealand was set up by the Ministry for the Environment. It is the official ecolabel and it makes the choice of genuinely environmentally preferable products easy. It is distanced from politics through its operation by the independent NZ Ecolabelling Trust.

Environmental Choice sends appropriately qualified, independent auditors into all companies that apply for the label and the applicants must scientifically prove all their claims against the set standards.

Every authorised use of the green and black planet-and-tick symbol must include a number showing the ‘standard’ that has been proven. All standards are detailed on the website and they are based on the best environmental information that can be found by the label.
