Blow-moulded retort containers

Gilpin and Company has been awarded exclusive distribution rights in Asia-Pacific for Silgan Plastics Corporation's OMNI injection blow-moulded retort containers. The multilayer, high-barrier plastic bowls and cylinders (cups) are designed for shelf stable processed foods that can be heated in a microwave oven and served. Silgan's OMNI retort containers are suitable for categories like soup and prepared entrees because they are lightweight, portable and, above all, microwaveable. Consumers have embraced the convenience this packaging format offers.

The OMNI retort containers will allow Asia-Pacific food marketers to extend current product lines or introduce new products. The containers are microwaveable, so consumers can eat the contents straight from the package. They don't need a traditional stove and pot, bowl or serving implements. The bowls and cups create a new, portable meal option for school or work, and consumers too busy to prepare a meal to take with them are willing to pay more for the convenience of heat-and-eat foods like soup, pasta dishes and seafood.

The OMNI retort containers are compatible with most existing filling lines.

The containners are manufactured by Silgan using a process that involves injection blow-moulding multiple layers of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene vinyl alcohol polymer (EVOH) plastics. The containers meet FDA requirements for high-temperature laminate regulation (21 CFR 177.1390). The precise manufacturing process allows Silgan to maximise oxygen and aroma barrier properties from the EVOH as well as achieve uniform layers throughout the container. No regrind is used resulting in contact clarity. The containers are available in a range of sizes, from 118.2 to 620.9 mL. Users can choose from white, clear or custom coloured plastic bowls or cups. Each container is individually marked, creating traceability. Gilpin also offers options on closures, including heat seal and seamed-on easy-open ends.
