Winners announced: 2022 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards

The winners of the 2022 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards were announced at a hybrid awards ceremony during Food Tech Qld in July, with over 250 people in attendance.

Coordinated by the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), the Annual Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards have been established to recognise companies and individuals who are making a significant difference in their field across Australia and New Zealand. The PIDA Awards are also the exclusive feeder program for Australia and New Zealand for the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards run by the World Packaging Organisation. All 2022 PIDA winners will be automatically eligible for entry into the 2023 WorldStar Packaging Awards competition.

And the winners are...

2022 Food Packaging Design of the Year

The Food Packaging Design of the Year award recognises organisations that have designed innovative packaging and/or materials, within food packaging and processing including fresh, frozen or other.

The judges have awarded two high commendations to Frutmac Zippmatic 100% Paperboard Foodtainer (Auspouch) and Nestlé Easter egg range (Nestlé Australia).

The winner of the BRONZE award is Maggi Recipe Base/Mono-PP Sachet (Huhtamaki Australia).

The winner of the SILVER award is Cadbury Roses limited edition Mother’s Day chocolates (Opal).

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Food category is ThermoShield Temperature Monitoring System - Food (Caps & Closures).

2022 Beverage Packaging Design of the Year

The Beverage Packaging Design of the Year award recognises organisations that have designed innovative packaging and/or materials, within packaging and processing for liquid or dry tea, coffee, water and soft drinks including wine, beer and spirits.

The judges have awarded a high commendation to Norco 100% rPET Milk Bottles (Pact Group).

The winner of the BRONZE award is Australia's Most Sustainable Milk Cartons (Brownes Dairy).

The winner of the SILVER award is Coles Home Compostable Coffee Capsules (Coles).

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the Year – Beverage category is Synlait Swappa Bottle (Synlait Milk Limited).

2022 Health, Beauty & Wellness Packaging Design of the Year

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the Year – Health, Beauty & Wellness category is Dsmile Box (Production Packaging Innovations).

2022 Domestic & Household Packaging Design of the Year

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Domestic & Household category is Fig & Bloom Shipper Box (Production Packaging Innovations).

2022 Labelling & Decoration Design of the Year

The Labelling & Decoration Design of the Year award is designed to recognise the addition of content to a pack which creates a unique or innovative appearance, function or communication. This may include labels, sleeves, tags, coding/markings, etching, directly applied inks or by any other similar process.

The winner of the BRONZE award is Hungry Jack’s Uno Promotion (Result Group).

The winner of the SILVER award is Billson’s Christmas Gin (Billson’s).

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Labelling & Decoration category is ID-Shield Anti-Counterfeit System (Caps & Closures).

2022 Outside of the Box Design of the Year

The Outside of the Box Design of the Year Award has been established for miscellaneous packs and materials that are not included in any other category.

The judges have awarded a high commendation to Lousy Ink (Close the Loop Group).

The winner of the BRONZE award is Peter Jackson Garment Box (Production Packaging Innovations).

The winner of the SILVER award is actually a tie between ATGA Table Grapes Project (Result Group) and Cadbury Roses limited edition Mother’s Day chocolates (Opal).

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Outside of the Box category is JBS & Opal Dunnage Solution (Opal).

2022 Marketing Design of the Year Award

Packaging can elicit emotional responses in consumers and should be seen as your best form of marketing. The right packaging design and eye-catching aesthetics can create emotional stimuli that ensure a brand is purchased. The Marketing Design of the Year award considers not only primary packaging but also secondary and tertiary packaging designs.

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Marketing category is Australia's Most Sustainable Milk Cartons (Brownes Dairy).

2022 Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design of the Year

The Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design Special Award is designed to recognise packaging that is accessible, intuitive, easy to open and innovative.

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Accessible & Inclusive category is Voltaren Osteo Gel 12 Hourly (Glaxosmithkline Consumer Healthcare Australia).

2022 Save Food Packaging Design of the Year Award

The Save Food Packaging Design of the Year award is designed to recognise companies that are working to minimise or prevent food waste from paddock to plate using innovative and intuitive design features that can contain and protect, preserve and extend shelf life; all the while meeting global sustainable packaging targets.

The winner of the SILVER award is 2DBarcodes by GS1 (GS1 Australia & Woolworths).

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Save Food category is actually a tie:

The first gold winner is ThermoShield Temperature Monitoring System (Caps & Closures); pictured at the top of page.

The second gold winner is Inghams Waitoa Free Range Butterflied Chicken (Sealed Air NZ).

2022 Sustainable Packaging Design of the Year

The Sustainable Packaging Design of the Year award is designed to recognise companies that have developed innovative packaging or processing solutions that incorporates sustainability considerations. Elements include Social, Material, Source Reduction, Energy and Recovery.

Due to the continued high standard of innovative designs that cover such a broad spectrum of the waste hierarchy the judges have separated the winners into subset categories. The subset categories for 2022 are: Reuse/Refill, Recycle/Recover, Renewables, Compostable, Industrial, Recycled Content and Closed Loop Collection.

Sustainable Packaging - Reuse/Refill

The winner of the GOLD award for the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Sustainable – Reuse/Refill category is Koh Kerbside Recyclable Spout Pouch Refill Pack (Close the Loop Group).

Sustainable Packaging - Recycle/Recover

The first Gold winner is the Royal Australian Mint Coin Packaging (MaCher Australia).

2022 Industry Packaging Professional of the Year

The winner of the 2022 Packaging Innovation & Design of the year – Industry Packaging Professional of the Year category is Dr Carol Kilcullen-Lawrence, Sustainability Consultant, UPM Raflatac.

2022 ABA Scholarships

The Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA), in partnership with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), is pleased to offer an annual scholarship program for Australia and New Zealand. The scholarship program will enable one eligible candidate the opportunity to undertake a Diploma in Packaging Technology valued at $9000 and a second person the opportunity to undertake a Certificate in Packaging valued at $7000.

The winner of the first 2022 ABA Scholarship which will enable one person to undertake a Certificate in Packaging is Lea Reynolds AAIP, Commercialisation Manager, Steggall Nutrition.

The winner of the second 2022 ABA Scholarship which will enable one person to undertake a Diploma in Packaging Technology is Mark Saturnino MAIP, Packaging Specialist, Woolworths.

AIP President’s Scholarship

The AIP President’s Scholarship has been designed to work in collaboration with the ABA program to help one additional person undertake either a Certificate in Packaging or a Diploma in Packaging Technology each year. The winner of the 2022 AIP President’s Award is Azadeh Yousefi AAIP with the decision to offer Azadeh a Diploma in Packaging Technology scholarship.
