Schütz DSL multi-layer IBCs

Schütz DSL has installed a multi-layer blow moulding machine specifically designed to produce a co-extruded 3- and 6-layer HDPE (high density polyethylene) inner bottle, in its Victorian plant.

The fully automated and robotic-controlled multi-layer blow moulder will enable the company to manufacture multi-layer IBCs in Australia. The multi-layer or ‘security layer’ technology, involves the application of as many as six different protective layers within the continuous blow moulding extrusion process of the HDPE, used in making the IBC inner bottle.

The additional layers are particularly relevant to the food industry where permeation, odour release or oxygenation in a plastic container can be an issue.

The additional security layers within the plastic are claimed to offer real advantages for a number of common beverage products.

The additional inner layer offered with the 6-layer option is based on material embedded in two adhesive layers, within a further security layer known as EVOH. Made up of a combination of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, it acts as a barrier to gas, aromas and odours. EVOH is resistant to oils and fats as well as organic solvents.

The EVOH security layer not only prevents permeation, but actually acts to increase the shelf life of the products stored inside the container.

IBCs are 1000 L cubic containers that consist of a reusable HDPE inner bottle surrounded by a steel cage which is mounted on a metal, plastic or wooden pallet for storage and transportation. The units hold the equivalent of five 200 L steel drums, yet occupy the space of only four 200 L drums.
