Data collection computer for cold storage applications

LXE has released what it claims is the smallest and lightest, wireless handheld data collection computer for cold storage.

The MX7CS is specifically designed for use in sub-freezing temperatures (down to -30°C). The extreme conditions of cold storage and refrigerated warehouses render standard mobile computers, associated bar code readers and wireless networking equipment ineffective.

Cold air, frost and condensation create specific challenges for rugged mobile computing equipment. These are further compounded by the insulation used to keep refrigerated and frozen storage areas cold. The insulation can block signals from access points outside the cold zone, making wireless connectivity both difficult and unreliable.

The type of clothing that workers in cold store environments traditionally wear poses another challenge for rugged mobile computing equipment. The clothing is heavy and usually includes gloves. The gloves are often cumbersome, particularly when using a keyboard.

The computer solves these problems. It doesn’t react to cold or temperature fluctuations when workers move in and out of the refrigerated warehouse. In addition, the unit can be used in a mixed-mode environment.

Its built-in heaters eliminate both fogging and frosting, while the internal components can withstand industrial temperature ranges and resistance to corrosion. It also has a conformal coating which protects the unit from condensation and a specialised battery ensures reliable power.

The device features a keyboard that allows gloved hand operation. And as many cold stores are dimly lit, the keypad is backlit. Loud audio signals that can be heard above the hum of the refrigeration motors are used as confirmation that the scanning was successful.
