Flavouring declarations on European food labels are about to change thanks to EC 1334/2008, a regulation passed at the end of 2008. This regulation effectively eliminates Natural Identical Flavours and greatly narrows the scope of what can be declared a Natural flavour.
According to the new regulation, a Natural Flavouring Substance is: “A flavouring substance obtained by appropriate physical, enzymatic or microbiological processes from material of vegetable, animal or microbiological origin either in the raw state or after processing for human consumption by one or more of the traditional food preparation processes.”
Although the regulation will not officially take effect until 2011, a lot of food manufacturers are now searching for flavour ingredients that comply with the new requirements.
Natural Dairy Concentrates produced by Butter Buds Food Ingredients are produced via an enzymatic process, and therefore meet the definition of Natural under EC 1334/2008. In fact, many of the most popular products, such as Butter Buds High Concentrate, Dried Cream Extract, Cream Plus and Butter Buds 32X, can even be declared as Natural Butter Flavour or Natural Cream Flavour. This is a declaration that, according to the new regulations, can only be used if the flavouring component of an ingredient is at least 95% from the named source.
