The use of pine-bark extract Enzogenol in food applications has been officially confirmed as being safe under the rules of the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Enzogenol can be used in various food applications, including non-alcoholic beverages, snack, sports and nutrition bars, cereals and processed fruit and vegetable products. Enzogenol is a natural plant extract from the bark of Pinus radiata trees, which is grown sustainably in New Zealand’s central North Island.

The product is produced in New Zealand by ENZO Nutraceuticals.

According to the company, the Generally Recognised as Safe (GRAS) affirmation builds on the toxicological and clinical research evidence of Enzogenol. The extract is claimed to have good antioxidant activity and health-promoting effects. The GRAS expert review panel classified Enzogenol as being safe at relatively high concentrations in foods.

The company has developed a chemical-free, water-only process to extract a range of natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that are present in the bark.
