NZ nut butter brand launches into space with specialty packaging
Fix & Fogg, a New Zealand-based nut butter brand, is claimed to be the first NZ-based food brand to be going into space on a NASA space mission. Requested by astronauts on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-8 for their journey in outer space, the peanut spread brand worked to ideate and create a specially designed space-approved product that its astronauts could take with them on their six-month mission.
Over several months, the Fix & Fogg team worked closely with NASA nutritionists to create a nut butter space pouch that can be sent safely, efficiently and with ease to space. Importantly, it needed to meet the complexities of consuming and storing food in zero gravity.
Traditional glass jars are not permitted in space because they are heavy and can break. The company developed an easy-squeeze pouch. The extra-wide 18 mm nozzle suits zero-gravity conditions yet still ensures Fix & Fogg extra crunchy pieces get to where they need to go: onto low-crumb space bread.
NASA’s SpaceX Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket took off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida destined for the International Space Station for a stay-aboard mission. Fifty specially designed and created 275 g easy-squeeze pouches of NZ’s Fix & Fogg nut butters are onboard.
