Market trends in focus at Anuga Meat

Anuga Meat will be taking place from 7–11 October in Cologne, Germany, with around 600 exhibitors set to be present at the trade show.

This year’s event will also focus on vegan and vegetarian meat alternatives and substitutes during the “Meet more meatless” special event.

Various exhibitors from all over the world will be present, representing the entire spectrum of meat production in its various processing stages: from unprocessed meat products, to meat preparations and convenience products, through to fine sausage and ham products and regional specialities. Exhibitors include Bell, Beyond Meat, Bigard, BRF, Campofrio, Cris-Tim, CPF, ElPozo, Grupo Vall Companys, Inalca, JBS, Lamex, LDC, Noel, Tönnies, Tyson, VanDrie, Vion, Westfleisch and Wiesenhof.

The sub-segments of the trade show are divided up across the halls as follows: Hall 5.2 sausage products, Hall 6 red meat, Hall 9 poultry and red meat.

What's on trend

Statistics from Innova Market Insights have shown that the meat industry is recording an average annual growth rate of 5.4% worldwide for new product introductions, indicating a dynamic and changing market.

Increasing demands for regionality and traceability of products, as well as for animal welfare and protection were recorded, with ethical and environmentally friendly products achieving a 17% growth rate and halal products a 14% growth rate. A high protein content and corresponding demands regarding origin of meat also recorded a 14% growth rate.

Vietnam was the fastest growing market, with a 51% growth rate, followed by South Korea with 38%.

The United Kingdom, China and Germany showed the highest activity for new product introductions between July 2021 and June 2022, with a market penetration of 19%, 14% and 13% respectively.

An ongoing trend is the rise in demand for plant-based alternatives or meat substitute products, also to address the growing flexitarian market. According to a 2021 survey, 41% of consumers would be open to new technologies having seen the developments of plant-based innovations.

Reasons for adopting a reduced meat diet are generally a mixture of health and environmental motives.

This trend is leading to meat aisles becoming more like a protein aisle, featuring options made from alternative proteins including soy, wheat, pea protein and many more.
