APAC Food Safety Award winners announced
The annual APAC Food Safety Awards — hosted by SAI Global — have recognised Allergen Bureau, Hayley Pfeifer from Riverland Almonds and Hazel Hughes from Allied Pinnacle for their excellence in food safety.
The winners were announced at the APAC Food Safety Awards Gala Dinner in Sydney, part of the annual APAC Food Safety Conference, held on 20–22 August. The awards recognise winners across three categories: Innovators in Food Safety, Leaders of the Future and the Ross Peters Award for Excellence in Food Safety.
CEO of SAI Global Assurance John Rowley congratulated the winners on behalf of his company and applauded their contributions to ensuring the safety of the food supply in Australia and New Zealand.
“We think it is important that their work in the industry is recognised and rewarded. We should all aspire and strive for excellence in making a positive impact to improving our food safety culture,” Rowley said.
Allergen Bureau received the award for the development of its VITAL Program, including VITAL online — a web-based calculator that targets precautionary allergen labelling (PAL) or ‘may contain…’ labelling.
The Leaders of the Future award was won by Hayley Pfeifer, a laboratory technician at Riverland Almonds, one of three major almond handlers in Australia. The award includes a food safety learning scholarship with SAI Global, valued at $10,000. Entrants in the Leaders of the Future award category displayed experience showing a unique perspective on food safety, a drive towards continuous improvement and leadership potential through vision.
Hazel Hughes, National Quality Manager at Allied Pinnacle, won the Ross Peters Award for Excellence in Food Safety, for her achievements in food safety, installing a positive food safety culture at Allied Pinnacle and ensuring all sites and personnel had the highest level of food safety standards. Allied Pinnacle is an Australian end-to-end bakery-ingredient supplier, producing flour, bread, cake mixes and cooked bakery products.
