Trans fat comment period extended

Tuesday, 07 January, 2014

In response to stakeholder requests, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has extended the comment period on its determination that artificial trans fats in processed foods are not generally recognised as safe (GRAS). The comment period has been extended by 60 days to 8 March 2014.

The FDA is seeking comments on specific issues such as possible alternative approaches, time needed for reformulation, burden on small businesses and technical challenges to the removal of partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) - the primary dietary source of artificial trans fats in processed foods - from the food supply.

Comments can be submitted electronically to the FDA via www.regulations.gov. When submitting, quote docket number FDA-2013-N-1317.
