Swedish academic to present at AIP Technical Dinner
A Swedish academic will be a key speaker at the AIP (Australian Institute of Packaging) Technical Dinner on Wednesday 6 March.
Dr Helén Williams, senior lecturer in energy and environmental systems at Karlstad University, Sweden, is a visiting academic at RMIT in Melbourne. Williams says that, in order to develop sustainable packaging, we must first increase understanding of the service dimensions of packaging - what packaging does.
The service dimensions of packaging, Williams says, influence environmental and social outcomes both in the supply chain and in households. It is often more environmentally sound to invest in better packaging if food waste is reduced, but these tradeoffs need to be calculated. In general, Williams says, packaging prevents food waste but the design can sometimes be a cause of food waste in the consumer user phase.
Robin Tuckerman and Warwick Hall will also be joining Williams as speakers at the Technical Dinner. Tuckerman, principal of RT Consulting, will discuss the relationship between the requirements of the Australian Packaging Covenant and the ready availability of materials with appropriate environmental credentials. Hall, the Vice President of the Australasian Bioplastics Association, will discuss end-of-life opportunities for compostable bioplastics.
