A revised food recall protocol has been launched by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). Assistant Minister for Health Fiona Nash says every Australian food manufacturer, importer, wholesaler and distributor should have a copy.

“Food safety is a priority for food businesses every day and it’s important they have the information and assistance they need to conduct a recall if one is required,” said Minister Nash.

“This latest edition of the Food Industry Recall Protocol, developed by FSANZ in collaboration with the state and territory food enforcement agencies and key industry stakeholders, will help ensure the Australian food industry remains well prepared to conduct a food recall.

“The protocol provides information on recalling food in Australia and guidance for food businesses on developing a recall plan, so if they are ever in the unfortunate position of having to conduct a food recall, they will know exactly what to do.

“It has updated information, including new recall templates for businesses to use and information about traceability, which helps businesses understand the importance of tracking food at any point in the supply chain. The protocol also now discusses the different ways of communicating recalls to the public, such as the use of social media.”

FSANZ has also produced a YouTube video on food recalls in Australia that provides industry with a snapshot of what is required.

The Food Industry Recall Protocol is available from www.foodstandards.gov.au.
