Not that Yalumba

Friday, 13 June, 2008

Australia’s oldest family owned winery has found fleeting notoriety after an 'unfortunate' name was given to a successful NSW Police drug investigation that came to a head recently.

Operation Yalumba — apparently unwittingly named after the premium Barossa Valley winery — culminated in the discovery of drugs in a Sydney suburban house.

“As ours is the only company — in fact, anything — by the name of Yalumba that I know of, I can only think that whoever was responsible for coming up with the name for the operation, did so over some very fine wines!” said Yalumba proprietor Rob Hill Smith.

For the record, Hill Smith said the NSW Police operation had nothing to do with his family’s winery, which has enjoyed an unblemished reputation since it was founded in 1849.
