ETU: asbestos issues in Qld food production are “ongoing”

Wednesday, 07 November, 2012

The Electrical Trades Union (ETU) has called for a national overhaul of asbestos procedures and reporting requirements, following investigations that the union body says reveal ongoing asbestos issues in some of Queensland’’s major food-production factories.

“Our first priority is the health and safety of our members employed in these workplaces, which include Parmalat, Heinz Golden Circle, Meadowlea, Amcor cans and OI glass,” Simpson said in a statement.

“Asbestos identification, awareness and removal is not something that companies should be able to ignore,” Simpson said. “It should never be a case of workers playing Russian roulette with their health when they go to work, because a company has failed in their processes.”

Simpson called on state and federal governments to fast-track the work to be done by the Office of Asbestos Safety.
