Conference to explore the French Paradox

Friday, 12 July, 2013

What’s not to like about the French Paradox? The idea that quaffing plenty of red wine with as much camembert and foie gras as you like appeals to most of us and is much more fun than anything a dietician or doctor would prescribe for our health.

The French Paradox and the complex relationship between wine consumption and health has been the focus of a series of international scientific meetings, which have been held since 1996. This year, Australia will host WineHealth 2013 from 18 to 20 July at the Sydney Convention Centre.

Conference delegates will hear from 27 different speakers from 10 different countries who are experts in cardiovascular health, pharmacology, ageing, cognitive function, psychology and nutrition and lifestyle.

“This conference provides an opportunity to bring together world experts for an exchange of scientific information and ideas on the impacts of wine consumption on human health,” said Dr Dan Johnson from the Australian Wine Research Institute, who is the conference chairman.

“The speakers will present results of studies examining the influence of wine on the patterns, causes and effects of health conditions.

“Sociological outcomes of the use and abuse of wine will be presented for debate and discussion. It is envisaged that these exchanges will contribute to the evidence base for policy setting, provide direction for new research efforts into the health effects of wine and offer opportunities for international collaborations.”
