Australian fish names standardised
The Australian fish names standard (recently approved by Standards Australia as an official Australian Standard: AS SSA5300 — 2007) will be launched in Hobart tomorrow, Tuesday 30 October, by Federal Fisheries Minister, Eric Abetz.
Seafood Services Australia (SSA) said the standard is the result of consensus among a wide range of stakeholders and an extensive process of consultation with fish names experts, the seafood industry and the public.
Standardising fish names was deemed necessary for the industry to provide effective species-based fisheries management, sustainability of fisheries resources and effective food safety management.
The standard was developed in accordance with Standards Australia’s requirements for accredited standards and will be maintained by SSA and the Fish Names Committee.
