Finalists announced for Banksia sustainability awards

The finalists for the 33rd annual Banksia National Sustainability Awards have been announced. The long-running awards, presented by the Banksia Foundation, are dedicated to recognising excellence in sustainability for Australian governments, businesses and individuals.

Many of the finalists work in fields relating directly or indirectly to the manufacture or delivery of food services.

One of the finalists for the Ignite Award, Two Hands, has developed a traceability technology that uses blockchain and GoTrace to ensure a transparent, independently authenticated way of keeping track of supply chains. One of the company staff, Sascha Rust, has also had a nod of recognition and is a finalist in the Youth as our Changemakers Award.

Planet Protection Packaging is a finalist for the Circular Transition Award and the Agriculture and Development Award. It uses waste wool as a replacement for environmentally taxing polystyrene, meaning that temperature-sensitive goods can be protected in a less environmentally impactful way.

Other finalists include Coles for its part in introducing sustainability as a major part of its vision and Samsara Eco, which is aiming to develop a circular economy for plastic.

“The future of sustainable development in Australia is bright. It is fantastic to see such a wide range of inspiring initiatives and an outstanding group of innovative leaders for sustainability,” said Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond.

“The finalists share a drive to empower individuals to make a difference, whether that be ensuring decision-makers have tools to operate sustainably or offering customers products that won’t harm the environment.”

The winners of the awards will be announced on 31 March. If you are interested in attending the awards in person, register to do so here.
