33% of Australians are following a 'free-from' diet
One in three Australians are eliminating gluten, dairy or meat from their diets according to a diet survey conducted by the CSIRO in September last year.
A quarter of 25- to 34-year-olds follow a gluten-free diet even though fewer than 1.5% of them suffer from coeliac disease. Across the whole population the CSIRO Healthy Diet Score 2016 report reveals that 12.1% of Australians aren’t eating wheat and/or gluten.
This can make dining away from home problematic.
As a coeliac sufferer who found it difficult to dine out due to limited dining options, Janet Brown decided to start the Gluten Free Eating Directory nine years ago. The online directory would be especially useful for people diagnosed with coeliac disease or with gluten intolerance, enabling them to freely find gluten-free products, places to eat and even online shops offering competitively priced gluten-free goods.
Today the directory is Australia’s #1 Gluten Free Food & Eatery Guide and has just been relaunched with an upgraded mobile-friendly website that makes searching for gluten-free food and eateries easy. The website is now compatible with all devices and features hundreds of Australian businesses that have gluten-free customers in mind.
There are a number of specific gluten-free search categories, comprising Eateries & Shops, Products & Manufacturers, Online Shops, Services & Publications and Overseas Locations. “The search process is simple, and all of the Australian businesses listed on the website have been individually canvassed to ensure that they offer extensive gluten-free choices,” said Brown.
The directory is also handy for travellers searching for gluten-free dining options while they’re away on holidays or business trips. It takes the worry out of where to dine, and whether businesses truly comprehend the careful food preparation required to cater for gluten-free customers.
