A U-boat in a bottle
German company U-Boot Getränke has launched a new cocktail onto the market, thanks to an innovative packaging concept from Greiner Packaging.
The classic ‘U-boat’ is a schnapps glass filled with high-proof spirits that is dropped into a glass with soda. Previously unavailable in clubs and bars where drinks were dispensed only in bottles, a bold ‘bottle-in-a-bottle’ concept will launch the product to a broader audience.
“We developed a bottle-in-the-bottle concept and mastered the challenge of functionality and product safety. Both bottles are sealed with the same cap which, when unscrewed, detaches the smaller inner bottle - the U-boat - from the seal; the U-boat then sinks in the bigger outer bottle,” explained Günter Ausserwöger, head of Greiner Packaging’s Division Kavo.
U-boat drinks are available in four flavours: ‘Blue’ (glacier water liqueur with lemon soda); ‘Green’ (herb liqueur with energy drink); ‘Yellow’ (vodka with orange soda); ‘Orange’ (vodka with energy drink).
The inner (30 mL) and outer (140 mL) bottles are made by injection stretch blow moulding; the seal is injected.
