Tipping and emptying shipping containers

Wednesday, 21 October, 2009 | Supplied by: Eurolift Pty Ltd

Elme has developed a method of using a reach stacker to tip shipping containers to empty them. This method is claimed to be suitable for any bulk materials which flow, including grain and coffee beans.

Depending on the repose angle of the contents, the spreader can tilt up to 45°. It can either be supplied as a telescopic model 817 to handle both 6 and 12 m containers or, alternatively, a 327 fixed 6 m model with a capacity up to 45 tonnes. Providing that the pick-up points for the container twistlocks are in the standard location, custom-built, non-standard bins can also be accommodated. A hydraulically operated clamp can be incorporated to hold the container doors closed until the operator is ready to release the contents.

The novelty of the Elme design is that the same spreader, which would normally be used to lift and move full containers around, also incorporates the tipping mechanism, resulting in a very cost-effective method of operating.

To ensure the optimum loading of materials with lower density, Elme can also provide a static filling station which tips the container to allow loading of the maximum possible volume of product.
