Canned milk design wins award
The Southern Cross Packaging Awards have been decided for the year, with the winners due to receive their awards at a presentation dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne, 4 October.
Sponsored by the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), the awards focus on fostering an interest in packaging in Australia's young designers and graphics students.
The standard was very high this year, showcasing the skills students have acquired and indicating the areas of packaging that young consumers consider need attention.
This year the three winners in the AIP sponsored Best Rationale category were:

The winning entry, Milk That Can, was a design for a 100% recyclable and resealable 1 L aluminium milk bottle. The can was faster to chill, had high aesthetic appeal and kept milk fresher for longer than standard packaging.
"Sustainability is an issue that will continue to shape the future of design," said the can's designer, Deanna German.
"As an upcoming designer, I believe that designers have the responsibility to design for the environment, as we have the power to create change."
