Sustainable growth strategies in the seafood industry
Last week, seafood industry leaders and decision-makers gathered in Canberra to present a set of strategies that they believe will shape the future of the industry. Their vision for a unified and empowered seafood community has been developing over the last seven months and their mission is to promote sustainable growth in the seafood industry.
The participants in The National Seafood Industry Leadership Program (NSILP) include members from the seafood retail, aquaculture, professional fishing, recreational fishing, marine science and Indigenous fishing sectors.
“Breaking down barriers within the seafood industry is vital for us to ensure a sustainable industry for future generations. The NSILP program brings people with different backgrounds together to embrace the multidisciplinary nature of the seafood industry and to enable participants to become leaders in their professional and individual lives,” said Meredith Epp, course participant representing The Marine Stewardship Council, Oceania.
With funding from the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) and sponsorship by the Sydney Fish Market, the NSILP has been running for 17 years. The 2017 participants recently graduated in Canberra in front of attendees from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, Sydney Fish Market, Oceanwatch and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority.
