Lupin labelling mandatory from 26 May
The food industry is responsible for ensuring that foods and beverages manufactured in Australia or New Zealand and all food imported into the countries is properly labelled and provides clear and accurate information about the allergen status of the product.
From 26 May it will be mandatory that any product containing lupin meets allergen labelling requirements. Even if the lupin is an unintentional component of a product the food manufacturer/importer will be held responsible if the allergen is present.
Traditionally lupin, a legume which belongs to the same plant family as peanuts, was not consumed by Australians and New Zealanders, but this has changed as food processors realised the benefits of its high protein content and fibre content.
Lupin was added to the list of allergens in 2017 and from 26 May 2018, all foods that contain lupin must declare it on the label — even foods that are already on the shelf.
