Find out about labelling and the law

Thursday, 11 May, 2017

Not only will you be able to see the latest equipment, services and technology relevant to the food and beverage processing industry at foodpro 2017 (16–19 July, ICC Sydney, Darling Harbour), you will also be able to attend a series of free seminars.

On Tuesday, 18 July at 11 am and noon you will be able to hear all about labelling and compliance. Bearing in mind that by law, all foods and beverages have to be labelled and that consumers don’t like mislabelling, these two seminars could be well worth your while.

At 11 am, NSW Food Authority Senior Labelling Compliance Investigations Officer Andrew Davies will explain where the NSW Food Authority fits in the national perspective and explain the labelling provisions they govern under the Food Standards Code. He will also discuss current issues and outline the Food Authority’s approach to compliance and enforcement. This will also be an opportunity to hear firsthand about the new labelling portal that provides industry and consumers with an easy-to-understand guide to labelling laws in Australia and NSW.

Andrew is responsible for improving industry compliance with food labelling across all food industry sectors. As the Food Authority’s labelling specialist, Andrew provides assistance to consumers, industry and other regulators on all labelling matters. Andrew is the NSW representative for Implementation Sub-Committee for Food Regulation’s Health, Nutrition and Related Claims Implementation Working Group and Food Standards Australia New Zealand’s Advisory Committee on Novel Foods.

Following Andrew’s presentation. Melissa Makris, a qualified nutritionist working at Merieux Nutrixciences, will discuss how getting your label right is an easy way of preventing unnecessary expense and associated brand damage, and is also a great way of promoting your product. In this workshop both sides of labelling — the basics of compliance and its marketing potential — will be discussed.

All of the foodpro seminars will be held in the seminar room on Level 3 at the ICC Sydney in Darling Harbour. All sessions are free to attend, with no bookings required. The exhibition stands will be located across Levels 1 and 4.
