FSANZ calls for comments on MRLs

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comments on proposed changes to the FSANZ Code to alter the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for 166 chemicals in foods to be consumed by humans.

MRLs refer to the highest level of an agricultural or veterinary chemical that can safely occur in food. The call for comments regarding this change is part of an annual push to align Australia’s standards with those of regulatory agencies in other countries and those suggested by the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Authority and the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

It is only permissible to change MRLs if there are no public health and safety concerns in order to prevent illness or sickness. The limits are precisely measured and factor in the amount of chemicals needed to control pests or diseases while still lying well below the limits that would cause safety issues.

“This annual harmonisation also includes amendments requested by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority to align with revised chemical uses in Australia,” Interim FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said.

“The proposed amendments will reduce trade barriers and support Australian food imports while keeping Australian consumers safe.”

Comments will be accepted until 6 pm Canberra time, 27 April for Australian parties and until 18 May for those outside the country.
