Fine Food donates leftovers to charity kitchen
Fine Food Australia 2016 proved why Australia’s food industry continues to be one of the biggest and brightest, with all forms of culinary delight available on the show floor — from porterhouse steak to avocado chocolate mousse.
A key focus for the show was the importance of sustainable practices and efficient technology. The newest in ovens, processors and innovation had many visitors learning how to better service their customers as well as their environment.
Fine Food Australia also works to minimise waste, regularly reminding exhibitors to only cook what’s necessary and make use of all they have at the show.
While visitors played their part in eating the many food samples available, there was still some food left over, but that was put to good use, thanks to the work of FareShare.
FareShare is a community of 800 regular volunteers who cook 5000 free meals every day for charities including soup kitchens, homeless shelters, crisis centres and community food banks. It’s Australia’s largest charity kitchen, so Fine Food Australia saw them as the perfect partner to use surplus food from the show.
Each day, FareShare received any surplus food from the show that was taken straight to the kitchen to be incorporated into free nutritious meals and distributed to Victorian charities.
