GM banana trial
The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has announced it has received a licence application from the Queensland University of Technology to conduct a field trial of GM banana with resistance to Fusarium wilt disease.
The trial is proposed to take place at one site of up to 6 ha in Litchfield Municipality, Northern Territory, between January 2017 and January 2022. The trial would be subject to control measures that restrict the spread and persistence of the GM plants and their introduced genetic material. The GM banana will not be used for human food or animal feed.
OGTR is preparing a risk assessment and risk management plan, which is expected to be released for public comment and advice from experts, agencies and authorities in October 2016.
