WA avocados set to be a smash in Japan
Western Australian avocados are the headlining item at the Western Australia Premium Food and Beverage Trade Event being hosted in Tokyo. The creamy fruits are being showcased with the partnership of the local avocado industry with the help of Hort Innovation, Avocados Australia and Austrade.
Avocados are WA’s largest and fastest-growing fruit industry, with Hass being the main variety grown, and the state is hoping to woo overseas parties who may be interested in importing and selling the fruits.
“There is a growing demand in Japan for high-quality, healthy food and beverages, and Western Australia is in a good position to satisfy the discerning market requirements for premium products,” said WA Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan.
“Japan is WA’s second-largest agriculture and food export market, and it would be fantastic to become a leading supplier of avocados, in addition to our key wheat, barley, canola, wool, meat and lobster exports.
“The WA Premium Food and Beverage Trade Event in Tokyo is the first event in a series of our government’s export market engagement plan in Japan and other markets, as we work hard to forge new market opportunities as WA’s international borders reopen in 2022.”
